Geheugenmetaal kan verbogen worden, maar neemt bij een bepaalde temperatuur zijn oorspronkelijke vorm weer aan. Het geheugenmetaal van het AZG, een metaallegering van nikkel en titanium, is bij lage temperaturen (onder de 28 graden Celsius) buigbaar. De chirurg kan het metaal zo aan de gekromde rug bevestigen. Zodra het metaal de lichaamstemperatuur bereikt, ‘herinnert’ het metaal zich zijn oorspronkelijke rechte vorm en neemt die weer aan. Het metaal trekt de rug dus recht. Het is voor het eerst in de wereld dat geheugenmetaal als rugfixatiesysteem bij scoliosepatiënten wordt gebruikt. Orthopedisch chirurg dr. Albert Veldhuizen kwam op het idee om geheugenmetaal te gebruiken in de orthopedische chirurgie toen hij in 1988 zag dat de uitklapbare koplampen van Japanse sportwagens door geheugenmetaal werden aangestuurd. Hij zag mogelijkheden in de medische toepassing van het bijzondere metaal en nam contact op met de Technische Universiteit Twente waar de afdeling werktuigbouwkunde al experimenten met het geheugenmetaal deed. Na jaren van voorbereiding en onderzoek kon Veldhuizen in december 2002 de eerste orthopedische patiënt met geheugenmetaal behandelen. Het ging toen om een patiënt met een verschoven lendenwervel.
